Coppock Performance & Engineering
High performance is designed into everything we do
Master Mechanic and Engineer
Steve Coppock, founder and president of Coppock Performance and Engineering, recently retired after a 40-year career in the commercial nuclear power industry. He held numerous leader roles including president of the STARS Alliance - a company that provides oversight and support for some of the nation’s highest performing power plants. Steve’s background is unique. In addition to a earning a degree in nuclear engineering, he also has been an ASE certified technician since 1981 and an ASE certified master technician since 1988.
Steve is passionate about cars and trucks, and he still has his first car - a flathead powered 1937 Ford coupe. His most recent project was a Gen V LT1 -T56 swap into a 1973 Camaro. He also owns a flathead powered 1924 Model T race car, and a 1969 Pontiac Firebird 400.
Precision Design
High quality parts alone won't provide exceptional results without a well thought out design for the specific application. Supercharging any engine is complicated and the flathead Ford is no exception. To properly size the supercharger and drive pulley ratios, many elements must be considered: the intended use of the engine, fuel type, displacement, compression ratio, camshaft, ignition systems, fuel system, etc.
We have the resources to help you make the best decision. We always recommend “buying the book before the supercharger.” If you're new to flathead Fords or want to expand your knowledge of the flathead Ford/Mercury V8s, I would recommend the Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilder's Guide. If you're just starting to explore supercharging your flathead Ford/Mercury, then Blown Flathead is the book to get. If you want to see what's possible with a supercharged flathead engine, then the 335hp Flathead Ford V-8 Performance Handbook is must-have resource. All three books have been out of print for years but are now available here from the CPE website.
Additionally, CPE uses a computer simulation to model your specific engine configuration to properly size the supercharger and pulley ratio and to provide an estimate of the expected horsepower and torque. The computer model results have been backed up with dozens of engines and dyno tests, and the computer model reliably predicts horsepower and torque, typically within a few percent of the dyno results.
Quality Components
We take great pride in our high quality parts and the exceptional results they achieve. We have all suffered with poor quality, ill-fitting parts and disappointing results. But the flathead Ford supercharger parts CPE makes and sells -- based on Joe Abbin’s designs -- have been proven to work for over 25 years with nearly 300 installations, dozens of dyno tests, and detailed computer modeling. Joe’s designs are stunningly beautiful AND they deliver exceptional horsepower and torque. In 2020, CPE was granted a license to manufacture and sell Joe’s flathead Ford supercharger kits. I've known Joe for almost 20 years, and we are like minded when it comes to high quality parts and exceptional results.
The supercharger kit parts (manifold, pulleys, brackets, etc.) sold by CPE are machined in Phoenix, AZ with USA-sourced materials. The parts are machined at one of the most respected CNC shops in the area - a family-owned business that provides CNC services to aerospace companies.
The supercharger part of the flathead Ford kit is a Holley/Weiand roots style design that has a decades-long record of performance and reliability. In 2022, Holley shifted their focus to other products and discontinued the Weiand superchargers. CPE was able to purchase all of the excess inventory for the smaller Weiand superchargers. Having this inventory provides CPE complete supply chain control for the flathead Ford supercharger kits that we sell, which is great for our customers.

With more than 50 years of practical, hands-on, automotive experience, Joe Abbin authored Blown Flathead in 1998. This was followed by the 335 HP Flathead Ford V-8 Performance Handbook in 2009 and Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilder's Guide in 2014. Joe owns Roadrunner Engineering in Albuquerque, NM, which specializes in consulting for high-performance automotive engines, including the flathead Ford. He's a partner in Albuquerque Dyno Services, an engine test facility. Joe has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and is a registered professional engineer. He is the owner and driver of the Motorhead Mart Special, a well-known blown flathead powered nostalgia racer in the Southwest. He was inducted into the New Mexico Hot Rod Hall of Fame in 2008.
